Piezotome Wisdom Tooth Removal

Piezotome-assisted wisdom tooth removal uses piezoelectric ultrasonic vibrations to cut or reshape bone during selected surgical extractions. The technique is designed to work selectively on hard tissue and may help the surgeon control bone removal around an impacted tooth.

Clinical studies suggest piezosurgery may reduce postoperative pain, swelling or limited mouth opening in some cases compared with conventional rotary instruments, although surgery may take longer and outcomes depend on case complexity and operator experience. It should not be described as painless or risk-free.

Treatment Process

• Clinical assessment: The dentist or oral surgeon reviews symptoms, medical history, medication and previous dental problems.

• Imaging: Panoramic X-ray or CBCT may be requested to assess root shape and the relationship to nearby nerves, teeth and sinuses.

• Anaesthetic planning: Local anaesthesia is commonly used. Sedation or general anaesthesia may be discussed for selected patients and settings.

• Surgical access: A small gum incision may be made. Bone is removed with Piezotome assistance when indicated, and the tooth may be divided into sections.

• Socket care and closure: The area is cleaned and sutures may be placed. PRF or other supportive measures may be considered by the clinician.

• Review: Postoperative instructions are provided and a review is arranged when needed, including suture removal if applicable.

Recovery and Aftercare
