Traditional braces use brackets bonded to the teeth and an archwire that applies controlled forces to move teeth over time. Elastic modules, metal ties, springs or other auxiliaries may be used according to the orthodontic plan.

Treatment Process

·       Orthodontic assessment: The orthodontist evaluates alignment, bite, jaw relationships, gum health and treatment goals.

·       Diagnostic records: Photographs, digital scans or impressions and appropriate X-rays are taken.

·       Treatment planning: Options, estimated duration, extraction or expansion needs, limitations and retention are discussed.

·       Appliance placement: Brackets and wires are fitted; bite supports or other accessories may be added when required.

·       Regular adjustments: Wires and auxiliaries are reviewed and changed throughout treatment.

·       Debonding and retention: Braces are removed after treatment objectives are met, followed by fixed and/or removable retainers.

Living With Braces

·       Expect pressure or tenderness for several days after fitting and some adjustments.

·       Brush carefully around brackets, clean between teeth and use any recommended fluoride products.

·       Avoid hard, sticky or very chewy foods that may break wires or brackets.

·       Contact the treating provider for a broken appliance, significant ulceration, swelling or uncontrolled pain.

·       They do not rely on the patient remembering to insert the appliance each day.
